Thomas Carlyle creía que la sociedad se cimentaba en el culto a los héroes: «La adoración a los héroes ha existido siempre y en todas partes». El heroísmo se ha convertido en un producto, un bien comercializable con gran demanda: necesitamos el heroísmo para sobrellevar la vida ordinaria, gestionar las dificultades y mantener una actitud optimista incluso en los momentos duros.
Cualquier película o serie de televisión, boom literario y objeto de ocio que triunfa en Estados Unidos, lo hace en el resto del mundo. De alguna manera, Estados Unidos acabó convirtiéndose en la principal factoría de héroes del siglo XX. En cuanto al volumen de producción, su capacidad exportadora y la influencia en los demás países –como mínimo en Occidente– Estados Unidos ha marcado la tendencia y establecido los códigos que rigen la industria del entretenimiento a escala mundial.
