La educación se presenta como un factor clave para capacitar a la ciudadanía frente a los desafíos socioecológicos actuales, considerados impulsores del cambio global. A pesar del conocimiento y la preocupación ambiental creciente, se hacen necesarios enfoques educativos transformadores que promuevan comportamientos responsables. En este marco, la Educación para la Sostenibilidad se plantea como una estrategia fundamental al integrar el aprendizaje cognitivo, emocional, social y funcional. Esta perspectiva educativa busca desarrollar competencias que permitan a la ciudadanía tomar decisiones informadas y responsables, con una visión crítica y contextualizada de tales desafíos.
Las competencias en sostenibilidad se entienden como combinaciones complejas de conocimientos, habilidades, valores, actitudes y aspiraciones, articuladas para fomentar una acción eficaz ante contextos complejos. Entre los distintos marcos competenciales, este trabajo se alinea con la propuesta de Redman y Wiek (2021), que identifica ocho competencias clave en sostenibilidad, las cuales deben integrarse de forma conjunta para impulsar transformaciones sostenibles. Pese al avance en su conceptualización, la evaluación de estas competencias se encuentra aún en una fase incipiente. En este sentido, la utilización de rúbricas se presenta como una herramienta eficaz para operacionalizar y medir la progresión del perfil competencial del alumnado. Esto facilita una evaluación formativa, siendo posible reconocer los resultados de aprendizaje en términos de logros hacia la sostenibilidad.
Este libro contribuye al campo de la Educación para la Sostenibilidad analizando tres problemáticas socioecológicas actuales —el consumo excesivo de carne, la presencia masiva de microplásticos en el entorno y la existencia de especies exóticas invasoras— desde una perspectiva educativa. Aporta evidencias científicas, conclusiones pedagógicas y propuestas didácticas contextualizadas que promueven el desarrollo de competencias clave en sostenibilidad. Así, ofrece herramientas para avanzar hacia una educación transformadora, crítica y orientada a la acción ciudadana responsable.
